The legend groups disappearances inside a loosely defined area. NOAA’s account asks readers to consider ordinary hazards and the missing comparison.

Start with the boundary

The Bermuda Triangle is a popular name for part of the western North Atlantic. NOAA notes that it has no official mapped boundary and is not recognized as an official geographic name by the U.S. Board of Geographic Names.

NOAA’s explanation points to familiar maritime hazards, including severe weather, shallow waters and human error. Its account says the evidence does not establish an unusually high frequency of mysterious disappearances compared with other heavily traveled ocean areas.

A collection is not a rate

A long list of incidents can sound compelling while leaving out the amount of traffic, the period covered and the criteria used to select cases. To compare risk, those missing denominators matter. Shifting a boundary or mixing unlike events can change the story without changing any individual record.

That does not mean every historical loss has been explained in full. A missing vessel can leave real uncertainty. The uncertainty in one case should not be converted into evidence for a single extraordinary cause covering an entire region.

Keep individual cases individual

For a particular disappearance, start with the contemporaneous record, weather information and the findings of any investigation. Separate what was established from what later retellings added.

We leave this broad legend without a precise map pin: drawing one would imply a certainty the geographic label does not provide. A source-backed location for an individual event is a different question.

OFFICIAL / PRIMARY-SOURCE POSITION

NOAA says evidence does not show mysterious disappearances occurring more frequently here than in other large, well-traveled ocean areas.
